“The Green Necklace of Tutrakan”

At the beginning of the new year, we had the pleasure of holding a thematic outdoor lesson with the students of Class 4A at Yordan Yovkov Secondary School in Tutrakan. Invited by their class teacher, Ms. Elena Nikolova, we joined a “Man and Nature” lesson dedicated to the protection of the local environment.

The meeting turned into a truly inspiring conversation with curious and well-prepared children. The topic was part of the school curriculum – “Protecting Nature in Our Region” – and we presented our story titled “The Green Necklace of Tutrakan.”

Using different “stones” of this green necklace, we introduced the protected areas in the region, with a special focus on the Kalimok–Brushlen Protected Area. Just days before the lesson, Dalmatian pelicans had returned there once again – a true symbol of the wild Danube nature.

Thanks to the cameras installed in the area, the children were able to see up-to-date footage of pelican pairs currently shaping their nests. The photos and videos were kindly provided by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds.

The school management also attended the event. We are happy that our partnership has been growing for several years now, and we are already looking forward to planning new meetings, games and educational challenges – both in the classroom and out in nature.
