Tutrakan is one of those great unpolished pearls that will be imprinted in your mind and heart. Here, where the river and the fertile land meet, the riverbed has remained largely wild. There are no stuffy ports and shiny yachts, but you can see a variety of fishing boats arranged like a rosary, and at sunset you can admire the flocks of birds and fishermen throwing their nets, which the light paints as silhouettes.
The Danube River flows calmly and majestically, and numerous islands, backwaters, sandbars, floodplain forests, and marshes shelter impressive biodiversity.
A large part of the region falls under NATURA 2000 and numerous protected areas:
Protected Area "Stenata The protected area "Stenata" will surprise you with the largest colony of bee-eaters in the country.
Защитена местност „Пожаревски острови“ is impressive in every season and every time you visit it. Here, if you are lucky enough, you will encounter a large colony of the globally endangered little cormorant, low-flying ground-dwelling kingfishers and high above them white-tailed eagles, various species of herons, terns and gulls perched on the sandbars. On the old and newly forming islands, in the forests and among the low bushes you can spot beavers, deer, jackals and many other inhabitants.
The protected areas "Boblata", "Saya Kulak", "Proletno boturche" (Cyclamen coum Mill) and smaller, almost unknown corners complete the precious stones of the incredible necklace of protected areas near Tutrakan.
And a little further east lies the Kingdom of Water Lilies - protected area "Blato Malak Preslavets" (Malak Preslavets Swamp" with over 147 species of birds, some of which nest on the leaves of aquatic plants.
