Wildlife Photography in Kalimok - What to Expect

The Kalimok–Brushlen Protected Area is the second-largest wetland along the Danube River in Bulgaria and a remarkable refuge for wildlife. The area is largely untouched, shaped by dikes, channels, and water surfaces that create a dynamic and ever-changing environment — ideal for nature photography. More than 240 bird species have been recorded here, offering outstanding opportunities for both bird and wildlife photographers. One of the most striking inhabitants is the Dalmatian pelican, a flagship species for the area. Thanks to joint conservation efforts with the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, the pelican has returned to Kalimok–Brushlen and established a large breeding colony, currently the largest in Bulgaria. Many other impressive species can be observed throughout the year, including birds that are rare or threatened in Bulgaria and across Europe. The diversity of habitats, open landscapes, and shifting light conditions provide excellent possibilities for capturing behavior, flight, and environmental portraits in a truly wild setting.

We offer a permanent floating photography hide designed specifically for waterfowl and other water-dependent bird species. The hide is positioned at a safe distance from nesting areas and carefully concealed among reeds and bulrush, ensuring minimal disturbance to the birds. It is suitable for photographing various species such as Dalmatian pelican, greylag goose, red-necked grebe, brown-headed and white-eyed grebe, white-cheeked tern, herons, spoonbill, glossy ibis, etc.

The shelter is positioned to the north and suitable for use throughout the day. The purpose of its location is to provide optimal light for most of the day. From the shelter you can photograph at water level. Suitable for observations and photography both in a sitting and lying position.
